If you run a local business — a restaurant, auto repair shop, clinic, salon, or any business with a physical address — local SEO determines how many customers find you. And Google reviews are one of the most important factors that influence local SEO.
How Google Decides Who to Show
When someone searches for "hair salon Birmingham" or "auto repair near me," Google evaluates three factors:
1. Relevance
How well your Google Business profile matches the search query. The right category, keywords in your description, and complete information all increase relevance.
2. Distance
How far your business is from the person searching. You have no direct control over this factor — your address is simply where it is.
3. Prominence
How well-known and trustworthy your business is online. This is where reviews play a crucial role.
Prominence is influenced by:
- Number of Google reviews
- Average rating
- Recency of reviews (newer > older)
- Responses to reviews
- Mentions on other websites
- Backlinks
Of these factors, reviews are the most actionable — and among the most powerful. Want to see how this plays out in practice for specific industries? Check out our guide to Google reviews for restaurants.
What Google Evaluates in Reviews
Number of Reviews
More reviews = a stronger signal to Google. A business with 80 reviews will almost always rank higher than a competitor with 8 reviews (all else being equal).
Average Rating
A higher rating helps, but not linearly. The difference between 3.5 and 4.2 is enormous. The difference between 4.5 and 4.8 is minimal. Google also favors authentic ratings — a perfect 5.0 with few reviews is less trustworthy than a 4.6 with a hundred reviews.
Recency of Reviews
Google strongly favors businesses with fresh reviews. A business that received 10 reviews in the past month will rank better than one with 100 reviews but nothing new in 6 months.
Keywords in Reviews
When customers mention relevant terms in reviews ("excellent pizza", "professional AC repair"), Google uses this as a relevance signal for related queries. You can't control what customers write — but great service naturally generates relevant keywords.
Responses to Reviews
Google has officially confirmed that responding to reviews improves local SEO. An active profile = a trustworthy profile.
The Local Pack — Why It Matters
When Google displays local results, the top of the page shows the Local Pack — a trio of businesses with a map. This position captures:
- 44% of all clicks on the page (Whitespark)
- 3× more phone calls than regular organic results
- 5× more navigation requests via Google Maps
Whoever lands in the Local Pack wins. And reviews are one of the main factors that determine who makes it in.

A Practical Experiment
Search Google for your industry + city (e.g., "accountant New York"). Look at the top 3 results in the Local Pack and compare them to your profile:
| Metric | Top 3 Average | Your Business |
|---|---|---|
| Number of reviews | ? | ? |
| Average rating | ? | ? |
| Most recent review | ? | ? |
| Review responses | ? | ? |
If you're falling behind on any metric, you know where to start.
Strategies for Improving Local Rankings Through Reviews
1. Consistent Review Collection
The goal isn't a one-time spike, but a steady stream. 5 reviews per week throughout the year is better than 100 reviews in one month followed by silence.
2. Respond to Every Review
Positive and negative alike. Ideally within 24 hours. Personalized responses, not copy-paste templates.
3. Optimize Your Google Business Profile
- Complete information (address, phone, website, opening hours)
- Correct category and subcategories
- Quality photos
- Regular posts (Google Posts)
4. Automate with Reputive
Reputive ensures a consistent flow of reviews without manual effort. The system automatically reaches out to customers at the right time and AI assists with responses.
Correlation vs. Causation
An important note: Google doesn't publish its exact algorithm. What we know comes from correlation studies (Moz Local Search Ranking Factors, Whitespark, BrightLocal) and official Google statements. Reviews are, however, consistently ranked among the top 3 local SEO factors across all studies.
Key Metrics to Track
- Number of new reviews per month — rising, flat, or declining?
- Average rating — trend over the past 6 months
- Local Pack position — for your main keywords
- Clicks from Google Business Profile — calls, navigation, website visits
- Response time on reviews — average time to respond
